Dhaka, Sept. 19 -- The government's new pay structure has left retired public servants and their families wondering how much their pension benefits will rise.

The package lifts salaries and allowances for serving employees while also providing higher pensions for retirees.

The changes, however, will be introduced in several phases.

An analysis of the gazette shows that those who retired on relatively low basic salaries and have remained on limited incomes for many years stand to see the biggest increases.

Those now drawing a net pension of Tk 9,000 or less will now receive between Tk 10,000 and Tk 18,000.

That represents a rise of up to 100 percent.
