Dhaka, April 18 -- Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has said the government is working to introduce a retirement benefit for journalists.

He made the remarks on Saturday while visiting ailing journalist Ismail Hossain at the Bangladesh Medical University.

The minister highlighted the lack of institutional protection for media workers, noting that despite being considered the "fourth pillar" of a democratic state, journalists often work under significant uncertainty.

"The issue of financial security for journalists has been neglected for a long time," he said.

"In light of this reality, the government has taken the initiative to launch a retirement pension for them so they can live with dignity in their later years."
