Dhaka, March 2 -- The BNP government has offered the deputy speaker post to the main opposition party Jamaat-e-Islami ahead of the first session of parliament.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed revealed the move while speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Monday.
He, however, did not disclose how Jamaat had responded to the proposal.
The first session of the new parliament is set to convene on Mar 12, with the election of the speaker and deputy speaker scheduled for the opening day.
Salahuddin also reiterated the government's commitment to the July National Charter, explaining that the move to appoint a deputy speaker from the opposition reflects their willingness to pursue political reconciliation.
