Dhaka, March 16 -- A former leader of the Chhatra Dal, the student front of the ruling BNP, has been gunned down in broad daylight in Khulna city.

Daulatpur Police chief (OC) Md Shafiqul Islam said the killing took place in front of KDA Kalpataru Market around 11:30am on Monday.

The victim, 30-year-old Rashidul Anam Rashu, was the former organising secretary of the Daulatpur Thana unit of the Chhatra Dal.

Witnesses said the incident took place near an oil factory and 10 shops -- all owned by Rashu -- in the area.

"Rashu was near his construction material business in front of the market when criminals shot three bullets at him. One of them hit him in the back of the head," said Shafiqul.
