Dhaka, Feb. 28 -- Joaherul Islam Joaher, a former member of parliament from the Tangail-8 constituency and Tangail district AL general secretary, has died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kolkata.

He was 69.

Joaher passed away at approximately 10:30 pm on Friday, confirmed Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel, Awami League's organising secretary, who is also staying in Kolkata.

Joaher had fled to India along with many other leaders of his party, including its chief Sheikh Hasina, following the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024 in the wake of a student-led uprising.
