Dhaka, April 23 -- Two workers have died after a passenger bus veered onto a road divider and ran over them in Dhaka's Banani.

The accident occurred near the Sarak Bhaban around 4pm on Thursday.

Banani Police chief Farid Ahmed said the Uttara-bound Bhuiyan Paribahan bus was travelling from Mohakhali when the driver lost control.

"We have learnt that the two victims were working on the road divider at the time. The bus reportedly hit the island while attempting to save a pedestrian, crushing the workers," Farid said.

The identities of the dead could not be confirmed immediately.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Mohakhali Zone) Russel Rana said several others were injured in the incident and were taken to the hospital.
