Dhaka, April 21 -- Amid a growing nationwide outbreak, a 4-month-old child undergoing treatment at Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal with measles symptoms has died in the last 24 hours.

The child, identified only as Yamin, passed away on Monday afternoon, taking the divisional toll to 20, said Barisal Divisional Health Director Shyamal Krishna Mondal on Tuesday.

The infant was from Mirzaganj Upazila in Patuakhali.

Of the 20 deaths, 17 were suspected cases.

Since Jan 1, more than 2,100 suspected patients sought treatment across the division. Of them, 1,839 were hospitalised and 84 tested positive for the viral disease.

So far, 1,468 patients have been discharged from hospitals.
