Dhaka, July 30 -- The government has approved a Tk 9.43 billion LNG import from Singapore-based Vital Asia to shore up gas supplies after the Moheshkhali FSRU breakdown.

The proposal was approved at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) at the Secretariat on Thursday, presided over by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.

The cargo will be procured through an international competitive tender.

The price is significantly higher than the average cost of LNG imports in recent months, following the energy crisis triggered by the conflict in West Asia.

LNG prices have been rising since March, with the cost of a single cargo nearing Tk 8 billion.
