Dhaka, June 2 -- Awami League stalwart Tofail Ahmed is heading to Bhola for the last time.

The Liberation War organiser and a leading figure of the 1969 Mass Uprising is returning to his home district in a coffin.

The nine-time minister died at the age of 83 at Square Hospital on Monday.

His body was taken from the hospital to Shahjalal International Airport around 11:30am on Tuesday.

Tofail's remains left Dhaka aboard a Meghna Aviation helicopter at 12:57pm, said Iftekharul Sadek, operations manager of the airline.

The veteran politician will be laid to rest beside his mother's grave.

His funeral prayer is scheduled to take place at the Bhola District Government High School grounds.
