United Kingdom, Aug. 26 -- The rollout of fully driverless robotaxis in London is unlikely to happen this year as regulatory and technical hurdles delay the UK government's ambitious timetable.

Uber and London-based Wayve were recently granted the capital's first private hire vehicle licences for self-driving taxi services.

They planned to begin passenger trips with a human safety driver "later this summer", before eventually removing the driver.

The government had hoped to accelerate the introduction of fully autonomous taxi services.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander announced in 2025 that commercial trials would begin in spring 2026, bringing the timetable forward by a year.

However, progress has slowed.
