United Kingdom, July 10 -- Chloe Sevigny put a "shell" around herself because she didn't want to be famous.

The now 51-year-old actress became something of a household name thanks to roles in movies such as Boys Don't Cry in 1999 and American Psycho the following year.

However, in an interview with People, Chloe insisted she's never been bothered about the celebrity status that comes with being a screen star.

She explained: "I think when I was younger, I had a very complicated relationship with fame. I wanted to be an artist and an actor, but I didn't want to be famous.

"I think that people didn't understand that, and so I did put a little bit of a shell around me."
