New Delhi, Aug. 24 -- Vizhinjam International Seaport could reduce export transit time by about a day and help India lower its dependence on overseas transhipment hubs as its handling capacity expands, experts said at the sidelines of the Bharat Nirman Summit.

Dr Soumen Roy, Professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), said the port could play an important role in shifting transhipment cargo currently routed through overseas hubs such as Colombo and Singapore to India.

"Vizhinjam port is very important from India's point of view mainly because it is going to replace Colombo and other transhipment hubs," Roy told ANI.
