Vallanadu Sanctuary: Dry-land refuge for Tamil Nadu's blackbucks
Thoothukudi, Sept. 16 -- Vallanadu Blackbuck Sanctuary, located in the Tuticorin area of Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi district, protects the blackbuck, scientifically known as Antilope cervicapra. Spread across about 16.41 square kilometres of dry grasslands and scrub forests, the sanctuary is one of the important natural habitats for blackbucks in southern Tamil Nadu.
The male blackbuck, known for its striking spiral-shaped horns, dark coloured body and remarkable speed and agility, remains a fascinating sight for visitors who travel to the sanctuary to observe the animals in their natural surroundings.
