Chennai, Aug. 27 -- The Tamil Nadu government has decided to release water from Mettur Dam for 45 days from September 1, depending on the water storage level and inflow into the dam.

Rural Development and Water Resources Minister N Anand stated this in a statement regarding the release of water from Mettur Dam.

Despite inadequate rainfall in the Cauvery basin during the southwest monsoon, the government has decided to release water from Mettur Dam in Salem district from September 1, considering the drinking water requirements of Tamil Nadu and the irrigation needs of the Cauvery Delta region. The decision was also taken following requests from farmers and the general public.
