New Delhi, Sept. 1 -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Centre to examine the feasibility of introducing totaliser machines for counting votes cast through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), with the objective of protecting the secrecy of voting patterns at individual polling stations.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana asked the Central government to consider whether totalisers could be introduced to prevent the voting pattern of individual polling booths from being identified and voters from being subjected to intimidation or victimisation after elections.

The court was hearing a petition seeking the introduction of totaliser machines for counting votes.
