New Delhi, Aug. 17 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed anguish over the loss of eight lives in a fire incident at a hotel in Tarapith, Birbhum, West Bengal, and extended condolences to the bereaved families while wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, "Anguished to hear about the loss of lives due to a fire tragedy in Birbhum, West Bengal. I extend my condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. The local administration is assisting those affected in the mishap."

The death toll in the hotel fire, suspected to have been caused by a short circuit, has risen to eight.
