Mumbai, Sept. 16 -- Indian equity markets closed higher on Wednesday, in line with gains across regional markets, amid expectations around the US Federal Reserve's interest rate decision supported investor sentiment.

The Nifty 50 index closed at 23,217.60, gaining 99 points or 0.43 per cent, while the BSE Sensex ended at 74,336.45, up 332.63 points or 0.45 per cent.

Large-cap stocks led the domestic market gains, with buying interest seen across banking, FMCG and automobile stocks. However, IT stocks witnessed profit booking after their recent outperformance.
