Mumbai, July 20 -- The Special Court in Mumbai, designated under the Maritime Anti-Piracy Act, 2022, on Monday convicted and sentenced all 35 Somali nationals involved in the hijacking of the Maltese-flagged vessel MV Ruen on December 14, 2023.

This marks the first successful prosecution conducted under India's Maritime Anti-Piracy Act, 2022, which gives statutory effect to the country's obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), 1982.
