Chennai, Aug. 18 -- Former Chief Election Commissioner TS Krishnamurthy on Tuesday welcomed US President Donald Trump's praise for India's voter identification system, saying the country has "reasons to be proud" of its election management and highlighting the role of voter ID cards in preventing impersonation and fraudulent voting.

Krishnamurthy was reacting to Trump's recent remarks, citing India's election system and comments attributed to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on the importance of voter identification.

"The electronic photo identity card was introduced sometime in 1993. So it has been invoked mainly to ensure that there is no impersonation and no fraudulent voting by non-citizens," Krishnamurthy told ANI.
