Jakarta, June 8 -- The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an updated tsunami early warning following a magnitude 7.7 tectonic earthquake that struck the Sulawesi Sea on Monday at 6:37 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, BMKG Head Teuku Faisal Fathani said the earthquake's epicenter was located at a depth of 47 kilometers northwest of Karatung Island, North Sulawesi, in the Mindanao sector of the Philippines, and had the potential to trigger a tsunami in several coastal areas of Indonesia.

"BMKG has issued an updated tsunami early warning for the coastal areas of North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, North Maluku, and East Kalimantan," he said.
