Thai women face 8 years prison for allegedly smuggling hashish to Bali
Denpasar, Bali, Sept. 2 -- Prosecutors in Bali are seeking eight-year prison sentences for two Thai women accused of smuggling 308.25 grams of hashish from Thailand to the Indonesian resort island.
Prosecutor I Gede Gatot Hariawan told the Denpasar District Court on Tuesday that the defendants violated Indonesia's criminal and narcotics laws.
"We ask the panel of judges to sentence each defendant to eight years in prison," Hariawan said before a panel led by Judge Kusuma Wardhani.
Prosecutors also sought a 100 million rupiah (US$5,900) fine for each defendant, with a 60-day prison term if the fine is not paid.
The defendants, accompanied by an interpreter and defense lawyers, said they would submit written defenses at the next hearing...
