RI phasing out coal plants to ensure industrial stability: ministry
Jakarta, Aug. 19 -- Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Yuliot Tanjung announced that Indonesia will phase out its coal-fired power plants (PLTU) in stages to protect industrial growth and ensure grid stability as the country transitions to green energy.
"This is gradual, because the locations are not only on Java. They are in Sumatra and in several industrial areas. Of course, we are also considering the sustainability of the industry," Yuliot said during the Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW) 2026 event in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The ESDM Ministry has identified 15 high-emission coal facilities targeted for potential early retirement.
