Jakarta, Aug. 17 -- Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Puan Maharani expressed her condolences to the victims of the earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and highlighted the importance of social justice as Indonesia marked the 81st anniversary of its independence.

She urged the public to commemorate this year's Independence Day solemnly and modestly in consideration of the grief caused by the natural disaster.

"During this Independence Day commemoration, our people are in a state of deep concern over the recent earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Let us pray for the disaster victims and hope for a speedy recovery," she said in a statement on Monday.
