Surabaya, East Java, Sept. 23 -- State-owned shipbuilder PT PAL Indonesia is preparing maintenance and modernization capabilities in partnership with Italian firm Fincantieri to adapt the aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi for Indonesian Navy operations, officials said Tuesday.

"Ship modernization demands a comprehensive understanding of the platform's actual condition, the characteristics of installed systems, and the user's operational needs," PT PAL CEO Kaharuddin Djenod said in a statement.

Djenod explained that modernizing the 40-year-old vessel involves thorough condition assessments, identifying obsolete technologies, and integrating legacy platforms with new sensor, propulsion, and weapon systems.
