Jakarta, April 28 -- President Prabowo Subianto said he has allocated about Rp4 trillion (around US$231.9 million) to upgrade 1,800 railway crossings across Java to improve public transportation safety.
"We estimate nearly Rp4 trillion for safety," he said while visiting train accident victims at dr. Chasbullah Abdulmadjid Regional Hospital in Bekasi on Tuesday.
He said many crossings date to the Dutch colonial era and have not undergone comprehensive upgrades for decades.
He noted many crossings are unguarded, making them prone to accidents.
He instructed officials to address the issue through two approaches: building guard posts or constructing flyovers.
