Jakarta, May 1 -- President Prabowo Subianto said the government aims to improve the welfare of 6 million fishermen through the development of 1,386 fishing villages this year.

"For the first time in Indonesia's history, fishermen are being taken care of," he said at the 2026 May Day event at the National Monument in Jakarta on Friday.

Prabowo added that 1,500 fishing villages will be developed annually over the next four years.

He said the program is expected to improve the welfare of more than 20 million people, including fishermen and their families.

Under the program, the government will provide facilities such as ice factories to help maintain the quality of fish catches.
