Jakarta, Aug. 1 -- Police forensic investigators have launched an inquiry into a fire that broke out on Saturday morning at the high-rise Pullman Hotel in West Jakarta, forcing an emergency response by dozens of firefighters.

The blaze was reported around 7:54 a.m. local time after hotel security guards detected smoke near the emergency stairwell on the upper floors.

Initial firefighting efforts using portable extinguishers failed to contain the flames, prompting an urgent dispatch of municipal emergency services.

The West Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency deployed 14 fire engines and 70 personnel to the scene, bringing the situation under control within 20 minutes.
