Sigi, April 21 -- Indonesian Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf encouraged residents facing severe economic hardship to enroll their children in the tuition-free Sekolah Rakyat (People's School) education program to help improve living standards.

"Both parents and the state are responsible for providing education to school-age children. Sekolah Rakyat is present to give children from the most disadvantaged or extremely poor families opportunities to access quality education," he remarked.

Speaking to the press during a visit to Sigi District, Central Sulawesi, on Monday (April 20), Yusuf stressed that the national priority program is primarily intended to serve economically disadvantaged citizens.
