Indonesia, Aug. 29 -- Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo highlighted the Penyengat Island development as a historic tourism area and center of Malay civilization in Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands.

"Penyengat Island has a fairly long history, so it must be preserved. We will certainly support the development of this area," Hanggodo said here on Saturday.

He said the Ministry has in recent years carried out various efforts to improve and upgrade slum settlements on Penyengat Island.

The work covers improving and widening neighborhood road corridors, building pedestrian pathways, upgrading the drainage system to prevent flooding, and providing utilities, shelters, and public open spaces.
