Jakarta, July 22 -- The Indonesian government aims to establish up to 200 additional Sekolah Rakyat (People's Schools) between 2027 and 2028, projecting a total of 500 schools expected to operate nationwide by 2029.

Sekolah Rakyat is a free boarding school program initiated by the Indonesian government for children from underprivileged families. The program has been implemented since mid-2025.

Deputy III for Partnerships and Media Relations of the Government Communications Agency (Bakom) Kurnia Ramadhana said during a press conference here on Wednesday that the program has expanded from 166 to 182 schools for the 2026-2027 academic year.
