Indonesia suspends six airports amid Anak Krakatau ash spreads
Jakarta, Sept. 6 -- Indonesia's Transportation Ministry temporarily suspended operations at six domestic and international airports after an eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau sent a volcanic ash plume into the air, the ministry said on Sunday.
Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said in Jakarta that the suspension followed an official assessment by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) indicating that the spread of volcanic ash had affected airspace safety.
The decision to suspend airport operations was made after an assessment of the latest conditions to ensure the safety and security of passengers and crew, he said during a virtual press conference.
