Jakarta, Sept. 24 -- Indonesia's government reported that 74 million people aged 17 and above still do not have bank accounts, as the government encourages account openings to ensure more equal access among citizens.

Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto said on Thursday the government is considering providing Rp50,000 (US$2.8) per person to support the opening of bank accounts, which would require around Rp3.8 trillion (US$212.13 million) in funding.

"Earlier, the Minister of Home Affairs said that based on data from Dukcapil and cross-matched data, it appears that around 74 million people aged 17 do not yet have bank accounts," Hartarto said at the FEKDI x Indonesia Fintech Summit & Expo (IFSE) in Jakarta.
