Jakarta, May 19 -- Indonesia's Culture Ministry said properly managed cultural heritage sites could help spur local economic activity through tourism, small businesses and creative industries linked to culture-based development.

Culture Minister Fadli Zon said on Tuesday that heritage sites should remain active assets instead of becoming neglected historical locations.

"With proper use, these sites can support cultural tourism, including religious tourism, and become part of the cultural economy," Zon said.

He cited Borobudur Temple as an example of successful revitalization after major restoration and area restructuring between 1973 and 1983.
