Jakarta, April 30 -- Bank Indonesia (BI) has expanded the use of its national QR code payment system, the Indonesian Standard Quick Response Code (QRIS), for cross‑border transactions with China starting Thursday.
The initiative allows Indonesians and Chinese citizens to make inbound and outbound payments by scanning QR codes.
For now, the system supports UnionPay QR, Alipay QR, and unified QR codes displaying both logos. Other platforms, including WeChat Pay, remain under development and technical adjustment.
"If we go to China or Chinese citizens come to Indonesia, they can use their mobile phone to pay," BI Governor Perry Warjiyo said at the launch in Jakarta.
