Yogyakarta, Aug. 13 -- Around 1,000 members of the deaf community recited Indonesia's proclamation of independence in sign language at Zero Kilometer in Yogyakarta to mark the country's upcoming 81st Independence Day.

"Today, we see the recitation of the independence proclamation in sign language by 1,000 members of the deaf community. This initiative should be appreciated by us all," Yogyakarta Vice Governor Paku Alam X said on Wednesday.

Although the event set a record in the Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI), Paku Alam X said its significance goes beyond the achievement, emphasizing the importance of turning words into concrete action.
