East NusaTenggara's quake death toll rises to 38, BNPB says
Jakarta, Aug. 15 -- Indonesia's disaster agency said Saturday 38 people had died after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Nagekeo District, East Nusa Tenggara, with 13 others injured.
"As of 3 p.m. today, the death toll stands at 38," BNPB chief Lt. Gen. Suharyanto said during an online news conference.
Two people sustained serious injuries and 11 suffered minor injuries. About 2,000 residents evacuated independently, according to BNPB.
The agency also reported landslides on several roads and damage to dozens of homes ranging from severe to minor.
One hospital in Maumere was damaged, along with numerous community health centers, known locally as Puskesmas.
