Jakarta, Sept. 3 -- Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said a magnitude 6.2 tectonic earthquake in the South Sandwich Islands region posed no tsunami risk to Indonesia.

BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Director Wijayanto said the assessment was based on tsunami-monitoring models run after the earthquake struck at 6:46 a.m. local time on Thursday.

"The tsunami modeling results show that this earthquake poses no tsunami risk to Indonesia," he said.

Wijayanto said BMKG's updated parameters put the earthquake at magnitude 6.2, with a depth of 119 kilometers.
