5.2-magnitude earthquake hits near Ruteng, no tsunami risk
Jakarta, Aug. 24 -- A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Ruteng in Manggarai District, East Nusa Tenggara, on early Monday, with no tsunami potential, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said.
The earthquake occurred at 4:20 a.m. local time at coordinates 8.30 degrees south latitude and 120.62 degrees east longitude, BMKG said on X.
The epicenter was about 38 kilometers (24 miles) northeast of Ruteng, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The agency said the earthquake had no potential to trigger a tsunami.
Previously, East Nusa Tenggara was also struck by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake on August 15, killing 75 people and damaging many buildings, including 1,378 schools on Flores Island.
