India, Sept. 10 -- The Uttarakhand government has shut down 107 madrasas across the state for failing to seek mandatory affiliation from the newly constituted Uttarakhand Minority Education Authority (UMEA), with 102 of the closures reported in Haridwar district alone.

The action by the state Minority Education Authority followed reports submitted by district Minority Welfare Officers on the status of madrasas operating without the required recognition.
