India, Sept. 2 -- The death toll from Nepal's devastating flash floods rose to 1,127 on Wednesday, as the scale of the disaster continued to overwhelm rescue and evacuation operations. In some of the worst-hit areas, survivors have been forced to wait up to 48 hours for a helicopter ride to safety.

Nepal Police said 4,858 people were still reported missing, keeping search and rescue teams under pressure more than a week after the disaster struck on August 26. Security forces have so far rescued 6,541 people, while nearly 8,000 police personnel have been deployed for search, rescue, relief and recovery operations.
