Sri Lanka, Aug. 11 -- The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the procurement of 2.28 million metric tonnes (10%) of coal required for the Lakvijaya Power Plant in Norochcholai for the 2026/2027 period.

The approval was granted at the Cabinet meeting held on March 30, 2026, according to the government.

The National Procurement Commission has also agreed to select two coal suppliers for each shipment to minimize the risk of supply disruptions and ensure the country's energy security. Accordingly, an International Competitive Bidding (ICB) process was conducted, with nine bids received.
