SriLanka, Aug. 15 -- The Department of Meteorology says there is no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka at present with the effect of the 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck northern Sumatra in Indonesia on Saturday, hours after at least 38 people were killed when a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off eastern Indonesia.



The latest quake struck at a depth of 168 km at 04.24 p.m. (Sri Lankan time) near Medan, the capital of Indonesia's North Sumatra province, the department said.



"There is no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka at present with the effect of above Earthquake. Therefore, the coastal areas of Sri Lanka are declared safe," it said.
