Around 4 million yet to obtain TIN despite mandatory requirement: IRD
SriLanka, June 14 -- Approximately four million more individuals have yet to obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), according to the Inland Revenue Department (IRD).
The Department noted that more than 13 million people have already been issued TIN numbers. It further stated that obtaining a TIN is mandatory for all individuals who have reached the age of 18, meaning that around 17 million people in the country are required to register for a TIN.
Meanwhile, under the Inland Revenue (Amendment) Bill No. 11 of 2026, the Department said the TIN has now been made mandatory for a range of transactions.
