1,693 killed in road accidents so far this year - Police
Srilanka, Aug. 13 -- A total of 1,693 individuals have lost their lives in fatal road accidents reported across Sri Lanka so far this year, according to Sri Lanka Police.
Speaking at a media briefing held today (13), Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police in charge of Traffic and Road Safety Range, W.P.J. Senadheera, said a total of 1,605 road accidents have been reported across the country so far in 2026.
DIG Senadheera said that 3,125 serious accidents, 6,477 minor accidents and 2,388 accidents involving property damage have been recorded so far.
Among those killed were 555 pedestrians, 603 motorcyclists, 119 pillion riders, 115 cyclists, 136 drivers and 162 passengers, police said.
