India, Aug. 22 -- India has notified an Rs 62,500-crore Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS) that links incentives to production, domestic component sourcing, Indian-owned brands, and local design and research and development (R&D), as the government seeks to move the country's handset industry beyond assembly towards higher domestic value addition.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced the five-year scheme on Friday. It will run from FY 2026-27 to FY 2030-31 and is expected to support cumulative mobile phone production of about Rs 39 lakh crore and generate around 60,000 direct jobs, according to the government.
