U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) released the following Statement for the Congressional Record commemorating World Press Freedom Day, which is celebrated annually on May 3. In his statement, Senator Welch underscored the growing dangers facing journalists worldwide, demanded accountability for the targeted killing of reporters in the Middle East, and urged Congress to recommit to defending press freedom both at home and around the world.
