Congressman Derrick Van Orden released the following statement regarding today's Supreme Court ruling on Birthright Citizenship:
"The Fourteenth Amendment was enacted in the aftermath of Dred Scott to guarantee citizenship for freed slaves, not to establish automatic citizenship for individuals who are unlawfully present in the United States or only temporarily here. This ruling departs from that historical context and the original understanding.
