According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An apparatus, system, and method for adding an overlay to a bar code symbol is disclosed. The bar code symbol is affixed to a perishable host product. The overlay includes a transparent substrate and an environmental exposure indicator material which is responsive to an environmental stimulus.
