ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 19 -- United States Patent no. 12,629,449, issued on May 19, was assigned to WALDEMAR LINK GMBH & Co. KG (Hamburg, Germany).

"Orthopedic implants with increased hardness and increased depth of hardness and method of making" was invented by Helmut D. Link (Hamburg, Germany) and Richard Csaszar (Bad Segeberg, Germany).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A prosthesis or implant device for use in joint or bone repair, or restoration of function, with improved surface hardness and depth of hardness and a process comprising treating a biocompatible alloy such that hardness and depth of hardness is improved."
