ALEXANDRIA, Va., Feb. 11 -- United States Patent no. 12,545,936, issued on Feb. 10, was assigned to University of Cincinnati (Cincinnati).
"Expression and secretion of UV absorbent material from transformed bacteria" was invented by Nalinikanth Kotagiri (West Chester, Ohio) and Tushar Madaan (Cincinnati).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A genetically modified strain of commensal bacteria Staphylococcus epidermidis is provided which produces a material with UV absorbing properties. The material with UV absorbing properties may be a mycosporine-like amino acid such as shinorine."
The patent was filed on Feb. 17, 2022, under Application No. 17/674,161.
